Tall Brown and Olive Stoneware Table Lamp
Tall brown and olive stoneware table lamp from Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye, France.
The glaze is glossy and deep. On the belly it is a warm chestnut brown, streaked with the marks of the throwing; towards the shoulder it lightens into olive and gold, then turns back to brown on the ringed neck, so that the colour seems to climb the piece as it narrows. The rings are crisply turned and each one catches its own highlight. The foot is left unglazed, showing the pale buff stoneware body underneath.
It comes from Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye, in Burgundy, a village where stoneware has been made since the Middle Ages and which remains one of the main pottery centres of France. The tall bottle shape and the ringed neck belong to the turned stoneware lamps produced by the Puisaye workshops for French interiors.
A beautiful piece.
