Large Modernist Hand-Painted Ceramic Plate

Ceramic plate is hand-painted with an abstract composition, using expressive black markings on a light ground. The surface is animated by gestural lines, splashes, and layered brushwork, creating a strong sense of movement and visual rhythm reminiscent of calligraphic drawing.

Executed as a unique, one-of-a-kind piece.

This large hand-painted ceramic plate is the work of Jean Schoumann (1934–2024), a Parisian painter, illustrator, engraver and poster artist whose work is full of animals, female figures and suns; this plate from the 2000s is a beautiful example of his modernist style on ceramics.
