Moss Green Lava Glazed Footed Ceramic Bowl
This footed ceramic bowl, attributed to Jacques and Dani Ruelland, was made in France circa 1960. Its matte moss green lava glaze, bubbled and granular, darkens to deep brown toward the rim and on one side.
The bowl has a rounded, hemispherical body set on a short, narrow foot. The thick glaze covers both the exterior and the interior; its cratered texture comes from bubbles that burst during firing. The rim is finished with a fine dark edge, and the underside of the foot is left unglazed, showing the clay body. A small pale spot inside the bowl appears to be original to the firing.
Jacques Ruelland (1926-2008) and Dani Ruelland (1933-2010) worked together in Paris, Dani designing the forms and Jacques developing the glazes. The attribution rests on the glaze, comparable to the matte green bubbled enamel of their Boule series from around 1960. The piece is unsigned.
Its compact size makes it well suited to a shelf, a desk or a coffee table, alone or grouped with other ceramics.
